Discovery Live: Ask a Scientist!

Explore your world with Discovery Live: Ask a Scientist! Tune in to hear from a variety of guest experts, ask questions, and discover the science and culture happening in your own backyard!

This week, we chat with local chemists and civil engineers! How can we make our construction projects more sustainable? What can chemistry tell us about Earth’s atmosphere? What do structures need to withstand natural disasters? And what does it mean if batteries start leaking?! Find out the answers to these questions, and ask your own!

Wellness Walk

In conjunction with FCMoD’s newest special exhibition, Mental Health: Mind Matters, join Volunteer Naturalists for a short and slow wellness walk along the Poudre River! Discover ways to incorporate mindfulness and daily time in nature into your self care routine.

Up to 1 mile; easy pace. Space is limited, pre-registration recommended. Participants must wear a mask and maintain social distancing of 6 ft. while participating in the program. Walks will leave promptly at 1pm from the main entrance of Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. Please arrive 10 minutes early. Presented in partnership with City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department.

*CANCELLED* Sound FX: Autumn Spooktacular!

*CANCELLED* Screeeeech, SCRATCH, Thuuump, BUMP, and blood curtailing screams… Join FCMoD as we explore Sound FX: Autumn Spooktacular. Learn about the history of spooky sound in film, and discover what tools are used to create the nail-biting, goosebump-raising, and seat-jumping sounds we hear in our favorite scary movies. Get ready for hands-on exploration of how a variety of sounds are made by foley artists while you build your very own spooky sound-creation tool kit!

 

Instruction for this workshop will take place live on Zoom on October 9th. Materials are not required; for a richer experience, we suggest you have some or all of the following household materials: hard sole shoes, celery, carrots, metal objects (forks, pots, etc.), scissors, sponge, leather gloves, long, thin stick, cellophane/empty chip bag, scarfs, and any object which creates an utterly eerie sound!

Cost: Tickets for this program are available with a pay what you can model! Whatever your budget, we want you to participate fully and comfortably. Your support makes a big difference for our nonprofit museum during these unprecedented times. Thank you for your consideration!

Ages: Open to all ages; designed for ages 8+. Younger participants may require parent supervision and assistance.

Meet the Ukulele Virtual Workshop

Is your ukulele gathering dust in a closet? Looking for a new outlook on the instrument? Join us for a uk-mazing time in a basic introduction to the Ukulele! Explore the history behind the instrument, discover how to best care for your Uke, learn chords, strumming patterns, and more. Start your ukulele journey here. Uke can do it!

 

Registration closes 30 minutes before the program starts. Instruction for this workshop will take place live on Zoom on October 9th. A packet will be sent to the provided email upon registration. Zoom link and additional information packet will be emailed to you the day of the program. We ask that you provide your own Ukulele.

Take a guided interactive tour to identify stars, planets, constellations, and more in the skies over Fort Collins! Afterwards, you’ll be able to go outside for yourself and be a stargazing pro!

This week, join FCMoD as panelists from SummitStone Health Partners chat about mental health in the time of COVID-19. How has COVID impacted our mental health? What disaster response tools are being used to help? And what skills can I use to better cope with uncertainty and fears during this time? Tune in to ask these questions, or one of your own!
