Virtual Playtime Pals: Things That Go

From cars, to airplanes, to cheetahs, there are lots of things that GO! Get ready to vroom to new places through the power of play.

For Show & Share: Find something in your house that GOES! Have this item ready to go at the start of Playtime Pals so that you can show it off to your friends!

Join FCMoD for a special new Early Childhood program… Playtime Pals! Through Show & Share, Imagination Time, and a Dance Party, your child will socialize and have fun with other children in a safe and welcoming virtual environment. Each week has a different theme for maximum fun!

Registration closes one hour prior to the program’s start time. Capacity is limited, and registration is first come, first serve.

Please note: that an adult caregiver must be with the participating child for the duration of the program.

Sound FX: The Art of Foley Virtual Workshop

KaBoom! Zing! Clank. Screeeeech…

Join FCMoD as we explore Foley Art – the art of adding sound to post-production cinema. Learn about the history of sound in film, and discover what tools are used to create the pew pew of  laser blasters, the clip-clop of horse hooves, and the simple background noise of everyday life. Get ready for hands-on exploration of how a variety of sounds are made by foley artists while you build your very own sound-creation tool kit!

Registration closes June 15. Instruction for this workshop will take place live on Zoom on June 17. All materials and supplies will be available by delivery or pickup before the workshop. Communication regarding delivery or pickup will be sent after registration.

Open to all ages; designed for ages 8+. Younger participants may require parent supervision and assistance.

Virtual Mini Makers: Animal Inventors

Imagine, invent, problem solve, and more during Mini Makers: Animal Inventors. In this program, children will engage in design thinking as they learn about recycling and reusing through story time and hands-on building. Once complete, each little engineer will have their very own up-cycled animal creation!

Registration closes June 23. Instruction for this program will take place live on Zoom on June 25. All materials and supplies will be available by delivery or pickup before the program.

Mini Makers programs require some basic tools, and craft supplies, in addition to the program materials provided. We recommend that you have scissors, tape, glue, crayons, markers, pencils, and washable paint for your child’s use during the program. You may purchase a Craft Kit with all of these items directly from the Museum by adding “Craft Kit” to your order. The Craft Kit will be delivered or available for pick-up alongside your Mini Makers program materials.

Have you ever wondered why some animals are at their most active at night? In this Discovery Lab, your family will experience how nocturnal animals like the Black-Footed Ferret use their senses to explore the world around them- long after we humans have gone to bed.

Get your lab coats ready and join us virtually for Discovery Lab! Discovery Labs are hour-long programs designed for families to explore a topic together. From dissections to coding, what will you discover next?

Flower Dissection Virtual Workshop

Absorbing radioactive materials. Producing the air we breathe. Sending a message of love. All in a day’s work for a flower!

Join FCMoD staff live on Zoom to discover the many different roles of flowers, from how they grow in nature to their place in human communication. From Ancient Egypt to Victorian England, explore the cultural role of flowers across the centuries. Then, learn how flowers are an important part of any ecosystem through a staff-guided dissection! Lastly, find your inspiration and create your very own flower artwork!

Virtual Little STEAMers: Songs & Sounds

Sing, dance, and count to the beat! During this class, little ones will learn about the different categories of instruments and what sets them apart. They will be introduced to sound science and basic musical counting through song! Participants will also create their very own instrument.

Through storytime, crafts, and hands-on activities, your preschooler will get to explore the building blocks of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math in this virtual version of Little STEAMers! Designed especially for children 3-5 years old and their caregivers.

Registration closes July 7. Instruction for this program will take place live on Zoom on July 9.All materials and supplies will be available by delivery or pickup before the workshop. Communication regarding delivery or pickup will be sent after registration.

Most Little STEAMers programs require some basic household and craft supplies, in addition to the program materials provided. Let’s “talc” about minerals!

In this lab, your family will learn about rocks and minerals and conduct an experiment to distinguish the two. Then we will use the Mohs Hardness scale to classify rocks, just like real geologists! Be there “ore” be square.
