Cactus Cat – Live in the Dome

Join us in the OtterBox Digital Dome Theater for a live concert experience in 360-degrees with Fort Collins’ own Cactus Cat! A five-piece band consisting of an unhinged saxophone, lush vocals, dreamy guitar, chunky ukulele, exploratory bass, and deep-in-the-pocket drums- Cactus Cat has their roots in sax-driven instrumental surf rock but have slowly and deliberately gone off the rails into the self-described realm of adventure rock.

Doors open at 7:30 pm, performance starts at 8:00 pm.

A Metta Musical Journey

Join guitar improvisator, Jeff LaQuatra and University of Northern Colorado anthropologist and meditation teacher, Michael Kimball, in the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery’s OtterBox Digital Dome Theater for a 360-degree “Metta Musical Journey.” Neuroscience is showing us that our idea of who we are—our “self”—is a useful construct, but one that can sometimes hinder more than help us.

Indeed, contemplative practitioners have been making this discovery for millennia. Buddhism’s 2600-year-old Karaniya Metta Sutta (teaching), for example, reveals a meditation practice aimed at dissolving the boundary between “self” and “other” to conquer fear and restore connection with the world. “A Metta Musical Journey” will feature a short talk on relations between neuroscience and metta meditation followed by a program featuring improvisational cello music, Dome Theater imagery, and a guided metta meditation.

A reception with a wine bar and South Asian hors d’oeuvres will welcome participants following the event.

General: $25/$23 for museum members, Student: $10/$8 for museum members

SOLD OUT: Playground Ensemble – Live in the Dome

The Space Program

Space and Astronomy has fascinated humans for centuries, but one of the distinguishing characteristics of the 20th Century was humanity’s journey into that great unknown made possible by NASA’s Space Program and others like it across the globe. Our desire to know more about the universe and our place within it touches all aspects of our culture, from music, to movies, to pop-culture and beyond.

In this fully immersive concert program, The Playground Ensemble closely collaborates with uniquely trained video artists and audio engineers to explore how space exploration and discovery has influenced today’s contemporary classical composers. The program will include pieces by George Crumb and Annie Gosfield, as well as 3 new compositions by Conrad Kehn, Nathan Hall, and Monica Bolles.

You will hear sounds taken from satellites orbiting the planet, and actual astronomical data from NASA will be used to create audio spatialization.

Doors open at 7:30 pm, performance starts at 8:00 pm.
Cash bar will be available.

$12/$10 for members. Pre-registration is recommended. (more…)
