Museum Takeover: Animals

Lions and tigers and bears (and snakes!), oh my! Learn all about animals from around the world, right here at FCMoD! With fun, interactive stations throughout the exhibit gallery, you can explore the animal kingdom firsthand. Create your own animal habitat, learn about animal superpowers, and meet the animals in FCMoD’s Animal Encounters exhibit zone.

Museum Takeover is a monthly series where we deep dive into a particular subject with fun and educational activity stations in the exhibit gallery. Activities are open to all ages, but recommended for children 5 and older.

Museum Takeover activities are included with admission/membership.

One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure

Let it Snow is an amazing holiday music spectacle, featuring a variety of festive classics from Frank Sinatra and Chuck Berry to Burl Ives and Brenda Lee. It includes a stunning finale by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The soundtrack is enhanced with colorful thematic animation and full-dome scenery.

SOLD OUT – Discovery Lab: Gingerbread Architecture

Discovery Labs are hour-long labs designed for families to explore a topic together. Did you know that gingerbread and frosting are the best construction materials around? In this lab, your family will have the chance to build and decorate your very own architectural masterpiece… out of gingerbread! Using basic engineering and design principles, you will learn to build bigger and better (or should we say, bread-er) than ever!

$5 per family of 6 or fewer/$4 member family

All ages are welcome, but recommended for ages 8+. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult. Space is limited to six families.

Life: A Cosmic Story

How did life on Earth begin? Find out on this journey through time. Witness key events since the Big Bang that set the stage for life. See the first stars ignite, galaxies coalesce and entire worlds take shape. On a young Earth, two scenarios for the dawn of life are presented – one near a turbulent, deep-sea, hydro-thermal vent, and the other in a primordial hot puddle on a volcanic island.

Ferret Feeding Frenzy

Visit with the museum’s very own live black-footed ferrets – who knows, you might become BFFs with our BFFs! Join us every Saturday & Sunday in Natural Areas Exhibit Zone at 2:30pm to watch as our furry friends tear into their weekend meal. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart… you’ve been warned!

Experience The Aurora

Over seven months in the Arctic Circle, our crews captured timelapse images of the Aurora Borealis with high resolution digital SLR cameras outfitted with fisheye lenses. The results are spectacular. For the first time the aurora has been captured as it was meant to be experienced, as a display that covers the entire sky. This immersive show shares the science behind the aurora and tells the story of our quest to find and photograph the aurora for wraparound display in full-dome theaters.
